The moon calendar is the oldest clock in the sky

Humankind watched the moon long before it invented any calendar, sweet soul. The sun measures the day, but the moon measures rhythm. It grows, it fills, it shrinks, it disappears and it begins again. That cycle takes twenty nine and a half days, and for thousands of years it decided when to sow, when to harvest, when a fisherman put out to sea, even how people slept. My grandmother kept a calendar in her kitchen, and on it the days were not marked. The phases of the moon were.

On this page you can see today's phase along with the sign the moon is travelling through. Those two pieces of information together describe the character of a day with surprising clarity. On some days beginning is easy. On others you feel a resistance no matter what you do. The moon calendar tells you where that resistance comes from, and very often it shows that you have no reason to blame yourself.

The phases of the moon and the work each one does

The new moon is the moment when the moon is not visible at all. It is dark, and for that reason it is the most fitting time to plant a seed. Setting an intention, starting something new, making a decision. People have chosen this day for thousands of years. The crescent that follows is the first sprout, the stretch where you give your first real effort to what you began and have not told anyone about yet. At the first quarter the moon appears half full and the first genuine obstacle arrives. This is where most people give up, when in truth this phase exists precisely to test their resolve.

In the gibbous phase the work moves forward but no result has arrived yet, and patience is required. The full moon is the moment when everything becomes visible; the fruit and the hidden problem surface at the same time. After the full moon the light begins to shrink and the energy turns inward. The disseminating phase is a time for sharing what you have learned. At the last quarter something must be released, and you let go of what you no longer carry well. The balsamic moon is rest, a few days in which doing nothing is the most correct thing to do.

Intend at the new moon, release at the full moon

These two points are the heart of the moon calendar. Writing down what you want at the new moon is an old tradition and I still recommend it, because it works. The reason it works is not magic but attention. A person who writes down what they want begins to look in that direction for months afterwards without noticing. The two or three days when the moon is dark carry a genuine quiet, suitable for asking yourself what you actually want.

The full moon is the opposite. It is a time for letting go. A habit, a resentment, an answer you keep waiting for. At the full moon people become more emotional, sleep breaks up, old matters rise to the surface. Do not treat that as bad luck. It means the sky is showing you what you buried. That night write down the thing you want to release and then burn or tear the paper. It looks simple, but something inside a person genuinely closes.

Which sign the moon is passing through

The moon stays roughly two and a half days in each sign and lends those days that sign's colour. With the moon in Aries people become hasty and impatient, arguments flare quickly and end quickly. With the moon in Taurus your body asks for comfort, you slow down, food and ease come forward. With the moon in Gemini the mind speeds up and talking and writing become easier. With the moon in Cancer feelings rise and people turn toward home, family and the past.

With the moon in Leo courage arrives and you want to be seen. In Virgo the urge to tidy up appears and you start making lists. In Libra reconciling and balancing become easy. In Scorpio everything deepens and there is no patience left for shallow conversation. With the moon in Sagittarius you long for distance, in Capricorn work and responsibility come forward, in Aquarius the wish to step outside the usual arrives, and in Pisces dreams grow vivid and intuition sharpens. Follow this for a week and you will begin to see your own rhythm.

Why the full moon unsettles everyone

This is one of the questions I am asked most. Hospital staff, teachers and bartenders share the same observation about full moon nights; people become more restless and more fragile. The most reasonable scientific explanation is light. Full moon nights are very bright and sleep grows shallower. A person who sleeps little is more emotional. Add the symbolic weight of the night to that and the effect multiplies, because people begin to watch themselves at the full moon.

I do not argue about whether the effect is real. For years the number of messages that reach me on full moon nights has doubled, and that is enough for me. What matters is meeting that restlessness as a tide rather than a crisis. Tides come and tides go. Do not make a large decision that night, leave the important conversation for the following day and be a little kinder to yourself. By morning things settle back into place.

How to use the moon calendar in ordinary life

The simplest version is this. Begin on the waxing moon and finish on the waning moon. For a new job, a new habit, an application, a first meeting, choose the two weeks while the light is growing. For letting go, clearing out, cutting, ending and closing debts, use the two weeks while the light is shrinking. Countless traditions from cutting hair to clearing a house follow this same logic, and when you try it you will see the difference yourself.

The second simple rule is not to book anything heavy on the days of the full and new moon. Attention scatters on those days. The third is this; look at which sign the moon is passing through and match your task to it. Paperwork with the moon in Virgo, a difficult conversation with the moon in Libra, a financial decision with the moon in Taurus. These small adjustments make a serious difference across a single month.

Eclipses are a subject of their own

Two or three times a year an eclipse season arrives, and those weeks are a far stronger dose of the full moon. Eclipses open doors and close doors. You will see a job suddenly end, a relationship abruptly clarify, a long postponed decision make itself. During an eclipse it is wiser to watch what unfolds than to start something new, because the information that arrives on those days is usually incomplete and the picture changes a few weeks later.

Where to look after the moon calendar

Once you have seen which sign the moon is travelling through, visit the zodiac signs page and read that sign's temperament, because while the moon passes through it the mood of the day takes on exactly the colour described there. The rising sign calculator gives you your own chart and helps you understand which days the moon touches you most. Many people finally understand why certain full moons weigh so heavily on them once they learn their own moon sign.

The card of the day page makes this rhythm concrete, because the sky gives you the weather of the day and the card shows what that weather means in your own life. If you want a longer look, the card meanings page holds all seventy eight cards. In my readings I look at the moon first and the card second, and the two pieces of information usually say the same thing in different languages.

Look at today's phase and build your day around it

Above you will find today's phase and the sign the moon is in. Come back here each morning for a week and ask yourself in the evening how the day went. After seven days you will start to notice your own rhythm, because everyone's relationship with the moon is a little different. The sky does not tell you what to do. It only shows you which direction the wind is blowing from. Raising the sail is still your work.

Frequently asked questions

Does making a wish at the new moon really work?

I do not see it as magic, my dear, I see it as attention. A person who writes down what they want makes that want clear in their own mind and then looks in that direction for weeks without noticing. The new moon is a lovely reminder for this because it returns reliably every month. Read what you wrote at the following new moon. Watching your own changes teaches a great deal.

I cannot sleep at the full moon, is that related to the moon?

It probably is, and there is nothing embarrassing about that. Full moon nights truly are brighter and sleep becomes shallower. Add to that the way feelings rise on those days. Stay away from screens that night, darken the room properly and go to bed early. Keep notes across a few full moons. Seeing your own pattern is always the best solution.

How do I follow the moon's passage through the signs?

This page shows today's moon sign, and the moon stays about two and a half days in each one. That means three signs change in a week. If you check daily for a month and note briefly how each day went, you will have built your own table. People's relationship with the moon is personal, and your own notes are worth more than any ready made list.

Do I have to live according to the moon calendar?

Absolutely not, and I would not think it right to use it that way. The moon calendar is not a rule book but a weather report. You do not stay home because it will rain, you simply take an umbrella. In the same way, when the moon shows you an unsuitable day do not cancel your work. Just carry a little more patience.
