Birth Chart
A photograph of the sky at the moment you were born. Enter your date, time and city, and your planets, houses and aspects are calculated.
What a birth chart is
A birth chart is a drawing of how the sky stood at the moment you took your first breath. Where the Sun was in that second, which sign the Moon was crossing, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon — all of it sits inside this circle. Astrology is not reading the future here. It is taking a photograph of one moment and showing it back to you.
Everyone knows their sun sign, but a birth chart is far more detailed. Two people born on the same day share a sun sign and can still have completely different rising signs and house placements. If you have never quite recognised yourself in your sun sign, this is usually why.
Why the time and the city are needed
The Sun and the planets move slowly across the sky, so for them the date is enough. The Rising sign, though, changes roughly every two hours, and the house cusps depend entirely on it. Even four minutes shifts the houses by about a degree.
The city matters for the same reason. The Ascendant is calculated against the horizon of the place you were born. A baby born in Istanbul and another born at the same instant in Sydney share the same planetary signs, but their rising signs and houses are entirely different. When you pick a city from the list here, its latitude, longitude and the time zone in force on that date are applied automatically, daylight saving included.
The big three — Sun, Moon and Rising
When you open a chart for the first time, three places speak loudest. The Sun is your core self and the direction you grow toward. The Moon is your emotional need and your inner weather; it tells you what makes you feel safe and where you retreat when you are tired.
The Rising sign is your doorway to the world. It is what people register in the first minute, the face you wear walking into a room. Many people recognise themselves in their Rising sign more than their Sun, because it is the side daily life sees most.
What the planets describe
Each planet describes a different part of you. Mercury shows how you think and put yourself into words. Venus shows how you love and what you find worth having. Mars shows how you want and how you move. Jupiter points to growth and where luck tends to open, while Saturn marks where you are asked to mature.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly and therefore colour a whole generation in a similar way. Their personal meaning in your chart comes from the house they sit in and the aspects they make to your faster planets.
The twelve houses
If signs describe the quality of an energy, houses show the area of life where that energy appears. The first house is identity and first impression, the fourth is home and roots, the seventh is partnership, the tenth is vocation and public life.
Where a planet falls tells you where its energy becomes visible. Venus in the tenth house and Venus in the fourth are the same way of loving played on two very different stages.
Aspects and the lines between planets
The lines across the middle of the wheel are aspects. They mark the angular distances between planets and reveal which parts of the chart cooperate naturally and which carry tension.
Trines and sextiles describe ease; those two planets support each other without much effort. Squares and oppositions carry friction, but friction is not a fault. It is very often the thing that makes a person move at all. In a conjunction two planets sit at the same point and their energies fold into one another.
A map, not a verdict
A birth chart does not decide your life. It describes the instrument you were handed, and what you play on it stays yours. There are no good or bad charts, only easy and demanding placements, and the demanding ones are very often where a person grows the most.
The calculation on this page is free and produces a permanent link. If you want to open your chart again later or show it to someone, keeping that link is enough.
Frequently asked questions
I do not know my birth time. Can I still draw a chart?
You can. Enter 12:00 in the time field. The planetary placements and their signs stay correct, because those move very little across a single day. Only your Rising sign and the house cusps become approximate, and you should not treat those two as settled.
Why does the Rising sign matter so much?
Because the whole frame of the chart is built from it. The Ascendant is the start of the first house, and the other eleven follow from there. Change the Rising sign and you change which house every planet falls in, which rebuilds the meaning of the chart from the ground up.
What does the R next to a planet mean?
It marks retrograde motion. The planet is not truly moving backwards; it only appears to from where we stand on Earth. In astrology this is read as that planet's energy turning inward rather than outward. Retrograde planets in a birth chart are very common and are not a bad sign.
Does a birth chart predict the future?
No. A birth chart is a photograph of a single moment, and that moment is your birth. It shows tendencies, strengths and recurring themes. It does not list what will happen, and the decisions always remain yours.
