What a free tarot reading is and how it works
A free tarot reading is a reading that greets you with three cards when you arrive with a question, a curiosity, or just a whisper about today, sweet soul. You ask a question, three cards are drawn from the deck, and those three cards whisper an answer through the windows of past, present and future. The same foundation is used in a professional session. The only difference is that in a session I sit across from you and think aloud about the delicate threads that run between the cards.
The reading on this page is entirely digital, but the energy of the cards does not weaken because the medium is digital. In thirty years of experience I have seen that the power of intention always matters more than the form of the setting. A question asked with genuine intention sets the cards in motion whether it is asked in front of a screen or by candlelight. What matters is your focus and your true wish to know.
How to ask the right question
In a tarot reading the quality of your question determines the quality of the answer. Questions that expect a yes or a no, such as does my partner love me, are not well suited to tarot, because tarot is not a fortune teller but a counsellor. If instead you ask what I need to see in my relationship right now, the cards will give a far richer reply. The more open-ended the question the more freely tarot speaks.
Be careful about asking on subjects where you are emotionally overloaded. When a person asks about something they want very badly they tend to see what they wish to see in the cards. If you are very tense about a topic, wait a few days and ask again once the tension has eased. A question posed with a calm mind always receives a clearer answer.
Question examples
Good questions look like this. What do I need to know about changing careers. What do the cards say about my financial situation this month. What should I see about the tension with my friend. These questions are open-ended, focused on a specific subject and leave room for the cards to speak. Questions to avoid include the following. When will I get married, will I win the lottery, will my illness heal. These either ask for a time prediction, which tarot cannot do reliably, or expect a definitive answer on medical or financial matters, which belong to the field of specialists rather than tarot.
The structure of a three card reading
The three card reading is the most elegant and balanced format in tarot. The first card represents the past and shows the root of the question. This is usually the place the person already knows but has not confronted. The second card represents the present and shows what is happening right now, which energies are active. The third card represents the future, but this card is not a fixed destiny. It shows the likely outcome if one continues on the current path.
Reading these three cards one by one is not enough. The real power lives in the story that connects them. If a Sword card sits in the past and a Cup card appears in the present, it tells you a shift from thought to feeling has taken place. If a Pentacle card appears in the future, it suggests that the feeling will eventually become something solid. The cards are like sentences that complete one another, and it is important not to fixate on a single word.
What to do after the reading
After you see the cards do not rush straight to reading the interpretation. First look at the three cards in silence and notice what they make you feel. The first impression is very often the truest. Then read the meaning of each card on the tarot cards and meanings page and compare it with your own impressions. When the two overlap you have truly understood the card.
Whether or not you are pleased with the outcome of the reading, do not be angry at the cards and do not draw again immediately. Tarot is a counsellor, not a chain of command. When a card you dislike appears, ask yourself what it is trying to show you, not what misfortune it brings. The strongest readings usually come with cards that feel uncomfortable at first but illuminate something important afterwards.
Is a digital tarot reading reliable
This is a question I am asked very often and my answer is always the same. Having the cards physically in your hands is a beautiful ritual, but what determines the power of a reading is not where the card comes from but your intention. A card drawn in a digital environment still meets your energy field, because randomness is cosmic rather than mechanical. In other words the card that appears on screen is still your card.
I prefer face-to-face readings because seeing the person's expression gives me additional information. But I have received remarkably accurate feedback from clients who used digital readings as well. In the end tarot cards are a tool, and regardless of the tool it is the quality of the intention behind it that is decisive.
Steps to take after the reading
On the tarot spreads page you can try different layouts and move beyond the three card reading. On the card of the day page you can draw a single card every morning and keep up a daily practice. By taking the which tarot card are you quiz you can meet your own archetypal card and gain a deeper understanding of what it means when that card appears in a reading.
Frequently asked questions
Does a free tarot reading really work?
It does, my dear, because the power of tarot lies in the intention, not in the price. A free reading done with a sincere question can be more valuable than a paid session done without care. The cards do not look at money. They look at the heart.
Can I ask the same question again?
You can, but not straight away. Asking the same question back to back will confuse you, because different cards come out each time and you will not know which to trust. Wait at least a week and see whether your question has changed.
What should I do if the cards show something bad?
First, know that there is no absolutely bad card in tarot. The Death card does not mean literal death but transformation. The Tower is not destruction but an opportunity to rebuild. When an unsettling card appears, ask what it is trying to show you, not what harm it brings.
Does a tarot reading show the future with certainty?
No. Tarot shows possibilities, not certainties. The future card is the likely outcome if one continues on the current path. Different choices produce different outcomes, and that is precisely why tarot is valuable. It offers a map you can still change.
